24 Weeks

Dir.: Anne Zohra Berrached | Germany 2016 | 102 min

Life is good for the stand-up comedian Astrid. She is successful and her career is flourishing, she has a beautiful house in the suburbs, a nice boyfriend-slash-manager, a lovely daughter and a 24-week-old baby in her very pregnant belly. But then her doctor informs her that her baby is likely to be born with Down's syndrome. And this has hardly sunk in, when the doctors tell her that the child also has a serious heart defect. And suddenly her life is not so funny any longer. Even though Astrid and her boyfriend try to tackle it with a good dose of black humour, they can't avoid asking themselves a number of serious questions about life and death. Is it responsible to bring a child into the world that will be both mentally and physically disabled? Doubt turns into discord, and soon Astrid has to face her life's worst nightmare – should she keep the child or not? '24 Weeks' dives headlong into a burning hot, emotional and explosive topic. Together with the Silver Bear winner Julia Jentsch ('Sophie Scholl') in the all-important lead role as Astrid, the director Anna Zohra Berrached paints a strong portrait of a woman who is facing a choice, and where there aren't any easy solutions. And the film probably also offers the first and for now only high-definition footage directly from a womb.

The screening on November 1st in Grand Teatret is part of the German Film Day. 'The Eremits' opens the day, followed by '24 Weeks' and 'Wild'. The day is presented in collaboration with German Film, Goethe Institute Denmark and the German Embassy, who will also serve a glass of wine after '24 Weeks'.
