Underdog

Dir.: Ronnie Sandahl | Sweden, Norway 2014 | 97 min

Dino is a young Swedish woman who, like as many as 80,000 others, has left Sweden and traveled abroad to find work. Dino has ended up in Oslo, but after having survived for a time on wild parties and what she can scrape together of cash, she loses her job and, accidentally, ends up as a housekeeper for a Norwegian family. The woman in the house works abroad herself, so the father and his two daughters are left to themselves most of the time - and then it is dangerous when, suddenly, a beautiful and charming young girl lives under the same roof. 'Underdog' (carrying the telling Swedish title 'Svenskjävel') is a precisely observed film about and from a new underclass, you just had not seen come into existence: young Swedes fleeing the extensive youth unemployment in Sweden to take shitty jobs in Norway where the oil money, after all, flows a bit more loosely. Dino is one of them and she meets a world which is the flipside of the 'New Nordic' luxury that we otherwise enjoy mirroring ourselves in.
